Not only did he hold us down with complimentary lodging at his Brooklyn bachelor pad during our recent stay in NY, but he also put together this dope video-montage using a piece from our performance in NYC... (not just one piece, but "100 Pieces" hahaha)... Anyway, we were pleasantly surprised to receive it along with his message, saying, "Your showcase at Secret Lounge in NYC was off the Hook!!!! I was able to capture some footage... look forward to seeing you on a bigger stage."

We'd just finished up a photo shoot with our guy Ten Photos... just stepped into place in front of this remote basement wall, ready to start filming what we call our "live-action shots" for the new Kinky Notti "SucCUMb" video... when Ten thought he'd be slick & pull out his iPhone to capture a sneak peak of us warming up the camera with a lil test-run through the track. In this video, we were mostly checking for lighting-quality & visual accuracy of the camera. It wasn't until a couple shots later that we actually started doing full, 100% action-takes. But still, this gives a nice glimpse into the behind-the-scenery of the video.

No we're not doing Gaga & TPain or whoever the hell... we're the embodiment of the concept that we created a while ago & even named our entire project after--> SUCCUMB!
When a person succumbs to something they fail to resist pressure, temptation, or other influential forces. In our new video, we intend to portray those little voices in the minds of the starring characters, egging them on through each scene as they succumb, or give into, different impulses & particular situations. The approach was to shoot a more cinematic story, which is why we consider the joint to be more of a short film than a video. There's plenty of play on fantasy vs. reality throughout... more Lynchian in approach, expressing striking images-in-motion. Let's not forget the futuristic, blaring sound of the track itself, which makes for a beautiful blend that's sooooo Kink Not.

Wow, our first installment of Open Rehearsals at the Kinky Notti Juke Joint turned out to be such betterwith! So good, that now we're making it a bi-monthly event. We thought "what better way for our fans & homies to get an inside look at our performances + see the evolution of our next music-project than to witness it all live at our rehearsals?"... Plus we love receiving any kind of instant feedback from people, so it's a win, win situation.

Last time at our Open Rehearsal we banged out a live photo shoot with our guy Ten Photos + performed... so now we have new photos for the upcoming Kinky Notti promotion (that we plan to unleash later on this week). Also Tshurhad Chivas got to play around with some of his new song-ideas for Havanah Maxie's fresh beat-collection. It was a super-tight sneak preview for all the newbies who came thru!

Dopest of all, is that there's recently been a string of nice show-offers collecting for Kinky Notti, such as our upcoming show at HOB Chicago. We're opening up for The Lyfe Jennings "I Still Believe Tour" Monday Sept. 27th... anyway, we can honestly say that so far, Open Rehearsals seems to be the perfect outlet for us to connect to for expressing that magical creative-connection shared between us with others... it's a beautiful thing!

Don't quote us, but it is quite possible that NYC naturally breathes & pulsates at the frequency of planet Mars. Kinky Notti's insanely-dope journey to NY led us to rockin out at Southpaw (Brooklyn's finest) with The Beatards last month ((catch Kinky Notti at Southpaw here)). Afterward, our girl Semaj swooped us over to Pyramid to do an encore performance at End of the Weak's Open Mic Set ((peace to the homie Vinyl Richie, the master of ceremony/dj of the evening... dude spotted us in the crowd & went nutz. He literally stopped the show & blessed us with a hot introduction onto the stage))... shit was amazing!

So here we are now... back home with a buncha random footage from our trip. We decided that we couldn't waste such classic material (can u say viral video?) So here's our home-video-style footage, accompanied by the song 'Respirator Thump' from our new album 'Succumb' ((listen to 'Succumb' here)) Check it out...

About the video:

We landed in Newark & took a ride on the monorail (we were sofa-king wo' out!)... we were headed to our lil come-up-room located right in the heart of Manhattan. At check-in the front desk told us, "the price you were quoted is for rooms on the 13th floor... the one that's under construction for the duration of your stay... but don't worry! All hotel rooms on that floor are completely renovated & we'll even throw in a free-breakfast voucher for each morning of your stay"... we were like wtf?? Then she dangled a warm, freshly-baked, chocolate-chip-walnut cookie in front of our faces. Pbbbbbbb...Done deal!

At first, HavMax was pretty salty about it, but actually once inside, the rooms weren't bad at all. It even became amusing finding the new developments each day walking back to our room -> NITE ONE= no carpet & no wallpaper. NITE TWO= carpet! NITE THREE= new wallpaper up... and so on. It's amazing how something as simple as carpet can make a huge difference when it comes to sound-absorbancy ;D

Anywho, the rally-scene was randomly captured as we rolled up on it & decided to jump in. We could hear a dope public-enemy-sounding emcee in the distance but couldn't see the stage from where we were standing, so we made our way through the crowd toward the stage for a better look. There we spotted the homies Bling Crosby & the Rebel Diaz crew, so immediately we fell right into the mix while muffoccurs went hard for the rally. They even took it to the streets & marched all the way through Chinatown. Shit was crazy, but peaceful... everybody was soaring with love-energy, even the babies.

The final scene was shot on a quiet Brooklyn street where we rolled up on a dude selling old albums & CDs for $2 apiece. He was pretty bored because nobody really buys CDs & albums anymore, so we stopped to chat with dude for a sec. He told us about how each weekend you can find him posted up, selling music in front of his momma's house. He even asked us to hold down the fort a sec while he ran inside. We were like "wow, OK... that's random as hell" lol, but dude's vibe was positive, so we didn't mind. The hilarity was watching Tshurhad Chivas interact with all the foot-traffic, calling out dude's sales pitches like "CD'S, RECORDS, 3 FOR $5 OR ONLY $2 EACH"... only in New York, lol

Making it Happen - The Ghetto Love Video

Ghetto Love means more than just the obvious (yes, it's a song about hot sex in the hood) but we also wanted to show how Ghetto Love is something that can be felt when people come together in hood spots to kick it & have fun... but even more than that, we wanted the video to show how Kinky Notti can be the source of that feeling. In other words, the video is a reflection of how Chicago gets it in on a good day.

Note how we said 'on a good day'... days prior we obsessively watched the weather to be sure to shoot on the first hot day in April, that way Bronzeville's 47th street was sure to juke extra hard for the camera. This worked both for & against us. Because of the attention the whole production brought, po-po's kept pulling over, tryna warn us about the danger we were in being out on the street with such expensive cameras & equipment. We weren't really sweating it then, but in hindsight we could understand why the forces urged us to rush along. Chicago made national headlines later that week with waves of senseless & deadly shootings on the south side.

Anyway, we basically had one weekend to make all the video-scenes happen. We were in all kindsa retail & landmark locations: Ibiza Clothing Store, Cut-Rate Liquors, the 47th-Street El platform, The Willis (or Sears) Tower... even that dope graffiti-covered alley in Hyde Park. Then the final scene of the video was shot at Havanah Maxie's uncle's Bronzeville mansion, which made the perfect backdrop for the basement/house-party scene.

That Saturday nite we were up til 3am shooting the house party scenes over & over. Previously we had casted dancers & actors to help with certain scenes. BTW we're really appreciative of those who came through & helped us put our vision into motion. Videos take a lotta hard work & patience to make happen, it's not always just fun & games... until there's a bar scene with real drinks involved... then everybody WINS.

Succumb Album Art - Lil Known Facts

Dude, Havanah Maxie KILLED this album artwork... she's quite the designer beast! A lotta muffoccurs have been asking about the significance of the visuals, so we thought we'd give a lil insight/fun-facts about how it came to be...

1.) We all know how much Tshurhad Chivas LOVES his ties... the problem was that he wasn't happy with how the wind had twisted it all up on the original album photo. Not to worry! HavMax knew she could easily "photoshop" his tie into its proper position... lol, chuch!

2.) Our photoshoot took place at the homie Floyd The Fourth's backyard/courtyard. During the middle of the shoot, he pulls out this big dopeass boombox as a prop, just playing around... it ends up inspiring the whole concept behind our album theme/identity. Thanks Bud!

3.) The tie around HavMax's head was originally to be worn properly around her neck... but at the last-minute, she thought it would be dope to rock it bohemian-headband style. It just kinda worked... can u say new fashion trend?!

4.) The global figure in the background represents the Earth & the moon all in one... it's life & death while also representing the dual nature of man, yin & yang, conflict & balance, all that good stuff.

5.) The geometrical-circular pattern behind us is called the "Flower of Life". According to wikipedia and other sacred sources, it represents "a visual expression of the connections life weaves through all sentient beings." The intricate design possesses every-known shape or form within itself. So basically it represents everything universal... sorta like the sound of Kinky Notti.

6.) The boombox represents "audio ammunition" which we use to combat this world of turmoil. On it we've placed our one common wish: PEACE TO THE BABIES!

SXSW Blind-I Quality Showcase 2010

Yo SXSW was insane! Shouts to the homie Nolis for these tight shots ((video footage of our shows & more coming soon))... These stills are from our performance at the Blind-I Quality Showcase @ Soho Lounge in Austin. We kicked off the Chicago lineup with a short-n-sweet 10-min set. At first we were like 10 mins? Can u say A-D-H-D? but we found out that's how it goes down at south by. Gotta give em your hottest shit & keep it moving. Anyway, this set was dope, even tho most cats in the audience were from Chi & had never even seen us rock. You know we had to get it in & bless em all with the new CD, Kink Not?!

Dancing is crazy when u think about it... to stand up & start rhythmically contorting the body, rolling, flailing & pelvis-pumping around the room seems utterly ridiculous in theory. But in practice, dancing is the shit... it's expression like no other. It takes some to new spiritual heights & defines cultures, time, etc. which brought us to think: who was the first muffoccur to actually get up & choreograph some shit? Like, to the degree that different spots around the world started having their own dances, claiming their territory with moves... like we percolate over here!

Like mighty gatekeepers of sound long ago, Kinky Notti stands. Between us, we hold a symbol of what Lyle Owerko describes as "rebellion" and "a way to shout your message at the system..." We are standing for freedom of creative expression, using "audio ammunition" and loving every minute of it!

We can actually remember when cassette tapes came out. They came & went quickly, but to us they promoted the ideal listening-advantage for music at the time. This was of course before songs could be randomly skipped 20-seconds in... this was when the listener would actually ingest an artists' full music-project one at a time. Tapes might not've provided the best listening-quality overall... but at least they weren't severely distorted like the super crushed, overly-processed mp3 files we get today. We started wondering where are today's Radio Raheems... the muffoccurs known for blasting that new hot shit in the streets through nothing more than a couple of giant speakers? In the hood, they were like the first street-DJ's... the music gawds (or demons depending on which tapes they blasted, lol) but still, wouldn't it be dope to literally bring music back to the streets??

Double Door Blues

It was a Tuesday nite & it was snowing... so what did we expect? WE EXPECTED MUFFOCCURS TO COME OUT THE WOODWORKS TO SEE US ROCK DAMMIT! We thought "wtf is everybody doing?" With less than 100 people in a bigass spot like Double Door, all we could do was have fun & treat it like a full-on Kinky Notti 'dress rehearsal'.

Right after our show, Ansy our photographer showed up ((did u catch the RIGHT AFTER the show part??)) Like the rest of the world, he got caught up watching the premiere of Lost that nite, lol... Guess he felt bad about not getting any on-stage shots of us, because he looked around til he found a spot for us to do a quick shoot--> IN THE BATHROOM HALLWAY, LOL! But since we weren't on shit anyway, we thought why not? Funny how a simple blue lightbulb in a dark hallway really added some "coolness" to these photos. Thanks, Ansy :D

Sugar Bear Saves Chick From Evil

Sugar Bear was that dude... somehow when "Cool ass Bears" come up in convo, Sugar Bear's name always pops up ((along with Yogi Bear & BooBoo)). Dude was always lookin hella blowed & lazy. What was his whole deal?

We set out to youtube his commercial ((mostly to laugh when we heard him sing "Can't get enough of that Golden Crisp" in that Sugar Bear voice))... instead we discovered that dude was not just a jingle-singing muffoccur, but in fact a Hanna Barbera Saturday morning cartoon from before our time. But what's particularly interesting about this episode here is how Sugar Bear, ((who was remembered as lazy and blowed by us)) was actually setting a rather Godly example. Now that's a story so classic, even the shorties won't be fooled by all the hocus pocus.

Ancient Street Art

We took an adult field trip with some friends to the Oriental Institute Museum after a nice fatty. There were all these bugged-out artifacts in glass cases that had been dug up from the ruins of ancient hoods. Some dated all the way back to 6,000-8,000 BC. So we started peeping all these crazy carvings on slate slabs illustrating what appeared to be a land of terror & strife. There were unfamiliar creatures roaming about... human-figurines who looked like treasure trolls... giants, flying man-lions & monkey-man slaves in neck-chains...

then the thought struck us:

What if these ancient artifacts were in fact street art? You know, like the graffiti, sticker-art culture & vinyl toy industry of today? That would explain why we find pebbles with drawings of muffoccurs getting eaten by unruly plagues of dino-beasts who eat humans. Thousands of years into the future, perhaps the street art on the wall below will be dug up & contain (to distant-future plaeontologists) what appears to be the story of mammoth buffalo-men roaming about, eating humans. The connection became quite evident!

And explains why little figurines like these always appear to be found in bulk...
they're dug up from the ruins of perhaps an ancient Rotofugi ((vinyl toy shop)) of the past.

Even when looking at this finding, it makes sense: the possessed elf-archer who decapitates muffoccurs is the same possessed rat-bastard who decapitates muffinking countries.

This was Kinky Notti's first show after a year+ hiatus... we had simply stopped performing to concentrate on recording the 'Succumb' album. It's cool, now that we have a buncha new music to rock instead of just a few songs... and adding the live-stage edge just makes it kinkier & nottier than ever.

It's all about sound-potency... which is why there's an entirely new band set-up. We still rock to midi tracks, but now we incorporate a few live pieces & some super solid backgrounds. The dopest part of all is rockin the stage with our peeps, who are also behind-the-scenes contributers to the album... we win. Period.

We left the stage drenched in sweat after 35-minutes of pure go-hardery. This was a more serious set for Kinky Notti and it'll probably only intensify over time, with practice. It looks like we'll be getting plenty of that with our upcoming college tour and major-music-festival schedules in the works. We're looking forward to many big things. Everybody knows we're freaky-freaks... but seldom do muffoccurs see the control-freak side of us. Along with our music, we do everything ourselves from the logo & graphic-design to the marketing & promotions... we get it in! But now that the project is recorded, we're left dealing with the concept that from this point on, the shit's out of our hands! Doesn't sound like such a big deal to you? Ok well let's put things in perspective with a little role playing, shall we??

Let's imagine that you're Kinky Notti, an up-&-coming music group from the hard city of Chicago. You've been recording your debut album for at least two years now with some heavy obstacles along the way. Yet regardless of the circumstances, you've persevered & never stopped climbing over the hurdles, because you feel in your heart of hearts that this project not only defines who you are, but you believe it's that unique sound that the world thrives on... and it's the expression that only your group can give.

Fate is on your side. Money is tight, but behind the scenes, you've been playing a mean game of chess, getting all the right pawns in the right places to make things happen for you. Sacrifice is nothing new... for example, when it was evident that studio-costs were getting out of hand, you cashed in your tax-refund check, went straight to the Mac store/Guitar Center and built yourself a brand new home studio to record in.

Now you're writing & recording vocals with ease from the comfort of your own home, on your own watch. Not to mention the fact that now you're using new music-programs and have started producing your own tracks in Logic. Imagine your delight to hear all of those crazy songs from your imagination becoming reality, one after the next, watching your sound fully manifest like never before. Not only do YOU know it's the shit, but whenever you play tracks for your friends and family they go nuts and immediately want a copy. You'd quickly realize that this music shit is bigger than you... it's your baby.

You've gotten used to controlling it all... from writing & producing to recording, rough-mixing & bouncing down all nine original tracks. You know it's time for an official mix & mastering session... but it's something you're not professionally trained to do. Not only that, but you don't have the equipment available to take your own tracks to the next level. It becomes apparent that it's out of your hands... and now it's time to trust another muffoccur with your 'baby'. Let's weigh the options...

Option 1: The Whole in the Wall Engineer
You come up on a hook-up of sorts... a friend offers his engineer buddy as the dude for your project. You rush over to Detroit & meet with them. You decide to throw him a few tracks to test him out.
The Pros= dude is budget-friendly, he loves your music off the bat, he has a decent studio with state-of-the-art equipment and the experience to know how to use it... he is even well-versed in his field and knows the names of several other engineers currently in the industry. But The Cons don't surface until after you get the tracks back...
The Cons= he 'plays God' on your tracks, meaning his interpretation of the track overpowers yours and he uses little to no regard with the reference track you gave him. It becomes clear that in order to make this option work, several four-hour trips to Detroit are needed so that you can 'babysit' dude and make sure he doesn't stray too far off the road. You decide to see what else is out there before moving forward with that.

Option 2: The Studio-Owner/Engineer
One night while hanging out with some music-industry buds, yall roll into a studio, where you meet the owner. He's a cool dude... he even goes out and kicks it with yall that nite at the club. You chit-chat and discover that he has a laundry-list of music artists' he's worked with in the past, mixing and mastering their projects. You set up a meeting to talk with him in more detail and find a few factors involved...
The Pros= his work includes several artists you recognize & listen to daily... the studio is less than 10 mins from your crib... and lastly, he's all about the business. Now, this can be seen as a pro or con because on one hand you realize he's in the business of keeping his studio open, so he's more expensive and is strictly about the paper... but at the same time, you know he's gonna get the job done efficiently for you.
The Cons= opaqueness, meaning it's not openly apparent that he's enthused by your music... he has a been there done that, over it kinda attitude. But this is YOUR BABY we're talking about! It's like him glancing at your baby then saying to you, "Yeah I'll watch your baby... You can leave it here with all these other babies crawling around, it'll be fine..." Would you leave YOUR BABY with him??

I guess it all boils down to the ego. Doesn't it always? All we know is that the integrity of our music is the most important at all times. It is very much like being an over-protective parent. But even parents need guidance and input at times to help them make informed decisions. Therefore, all thoughts or encouraging words are welcome...

By summertime prepare to be introduced to a NEW & improved Kinky Notti... one with familiar flavor but a new identity. The thing is: we're still trying to decide what our new identity should be. Here are some ideas we came up with in a recent brainstorm... ideas sofa king crazy they just might work!

Option 1= The Fergie

Getting a new kick-ass lead singer with a hot bod & edge. Just picture us on some 80's pop, out-of-this-world type-shit...

sitting on the other planets wearing metallic jackets?... HOT!

Option 2 = The Mean Mug

We've realized that with lyrics like "don't make me f*ck yo ass up" we probably need to start "looking the part" more often like our boy Sticky Fingaz from Onyx. To pull off this option, we'd have to start mean-muggin at our shows & photo shoots just to show muffoccurs that Kink Not goes super hardcore.

Option 3 = The Gyrlz

We're thinkin bout getting The Gyrlz to make this option work... hence our current search for basically a new singing-version of Salt-N-Pepa. We thought it'd be fresh to add background singers to the mix so that HavMax & ChivRock can finally grab those red spandex cat-suits out of lay-a-way and rock the f*ck out.

Option 4 = The Dudes

Remember how hard Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam went back in the day? With this plan, adding two soft-singing males to the mix may really take Kinky Notti's sound to a whole new level. HavMax can also learn some hot moves and take full command of the stage & camera.

Option 6 = The Crazy Band

Kinky Notti has been rockin on stage to midi tracks for way too long... it's time to super-size our shows & add a crazy-wild band... we're talking full-on stage parties! We know it's impossible to imagine Kinky Notti + a band, but trust it's gonna be HOT!

Street artists are on the come-up these days... and besides, street cred has always been like bonafide currency in the music industry. What better way for Kink Not to gain exposure than to set up stage right on the mag mile & rock the f*ck out?

Sang is one of the few promoters in Chicago who keep the hip hop/soul scene alive. We really respected his invite for us to come perform at Subterranean. Leading up, we kept hearing rumors about the show really being a Sang B-Day Celebration, but when we wished him a happy birthday that nite, he claimed it wasn't anywhere near his birthday. He was all, "Why couldn't people've spread a better rumor bout me? Like Sang killed a bunch of people or something like that??" Dude is wild, but anyway...

SubT is one of our fave music venues to rock. It's cozy and has two floors. The second floor is U-shaped with the middle cut out. We always feel like we're in a mini Roman colosseum. But there's something more theatrical-feeling about that stage... perfect for the more colorful performances, Kink Not??

Breaking News: Shortly after the show, we got word that Chae LeFunk was in the hospital. Doctors had found a tumor on her brain. She underwent several brain surgeries. The hook & song-concept of "Nasty Nasty" originated from Tshurhad Chivas' Ol Dirty Bastard impersonations. During the production of "Nasty Nasty", the Logic Pro file was even named "Dirt Aint Dead" for months before it was changed to reflect the song's lyrics. The rest of the group realized that Tshurhad's ODB song was so crazy, it just might work! Kink Not??

Who's designjesse?

You know how you put your name in a google search to see what randomly pops up? Well, sometimes googling sends you a pleasant surprise. We found designjesse, some cool photographer's flickr page ((we have no idea who, but you rock designjesse)). There were photos of Kinky Notti from our show at the CRB Loft, but the dope thing about it was how we were classified in the set called "musical people" along with other banging artists like Nas & even Klaxons.

Speaking of Klaxons, we're a big fan of this video: Gravity's Rainbow. The whole psychedelic 80's, f*cked-up-on-purpose graphics, with the clever transitions thru television screens just kinda worked for us.

Another thing we're really into is worldwide street art... & apparently, so is designjesse. We loved these shots from Paris and NY that somehow, inadvertently put both cities up for comparison. And from here, Paris really seems smarter with their illustration, design-influenced graffiti, but hey.

Tshurhad is a big birthday freak. He gets all crazy about it, runnin round telling muffoccurs, "My Born Day is in 20 more days... yeah I was born Thanksgiving morning..." Then he goes through his whole story bout how his father called his grandmother to announce the 8lb "turkey" he had for her.

So this year Chiv Rock's B-Day spot was downtown at the oh-so-futuristic Sky Lounge ((40th floor of the new Avenue Hotel)). We were right on the Mag Mile, 40 stories up, with a ridiculous view. Plus you know we had to lock down the "Kink Suite" for a lil after-party fun. Anyway, that night Tshurhad put together this outfit that was...well...one of those "nobody could, or would, pull-it-off except-for-him type joints". All white, with lite-up glasses and pearls gallore... you know muffoccurs were dying to try on those lite-up goggle-joints just for shits and giggles.

Dude, those glasses gave a whole new perspective on "moonshine" after a shot of yak... & they had eight different settings: concentric-circles, flash on-&-off, fast, medium, slow, random... those glasses ruled like none other!

The Sky Lounge is like a secret agent hang-out. It gives the feeling of being in an airport control-room tower. And Tshurhad celebrated his bday the right way: with "first class" friends & fam...

Green Line Holiday

What started out as a nice trip to the MCA turned into a nightmare when we headed back home via the el. The green line's been under maintenance for a while so we expected a long wait, but we never expected this crazy holiday train to roll up. But still we hopped on, thinking that it'd probably take a half-hour or longer for another train to arrive.

They completely decked the halls with boughs of holly in that bitch. Santa even had his own car with his lil helpers giving everyone candy canes. There wasn't an inch on that train that was left uncovered with holiday cheer... they had Christmas songs playing over loud speakers and everything.

About 15 mins. into the trip the train stopped due to that track maintenance bullsh*t mentioned earlier. So we sat... and sat... and sat while they attempted to get everything back rolling. The holiday chear turned into turmoil and grief with every passing rendition of Jingle Bells & Sleigh Ride. Once we'd finally reached our destination and the doors opened, people ran out screaming and partially bald. It was the single most horrifying train experience of our lives.

So if we're not present here, trust that our presence is being felt elsewhere, beyond the computer.

People are sofa-king glued to their computers...why did this one college-kid-couple we know spend hours during our photo shoot "caking" in front of a computer like that's the new way to watch TV?... that's a whole nother blog, but the point is: at some point you gotta get out & connect with the world. For us, It's those personal connections that go a long way. We're always excited to meet someone new who can vibe to our music–– from the nite-lifers, crate diggers & taste-makers to the trunk rattlers, potheads & tini-boppers.

It never gets old seeing the reaction of a first-timer who, when dragged out to one of our shows on one offbeat nite, finds something fresh and completely iller than what they had expected. Those little crack-nugget moments keep Kink Not jonesing to find more "Kink Not Heads". We love nothing more than putting on shows for those who support and respect the Chicago music revolution.

The new growing trend is music events & shows in random spots: Galleries, Festivals, Boutiques, Hair Salons, Ball Rooms, Lounges...you name it, Kinky Notti's rocked it! The energy is always super dope so we decided to kick off our own series of "rocking shows in arbitrary places type events" we call The Beat Boutique.

The first installment of Beat Boutique at Silver Room was a win-win situation for ourselves, who walked away with "used to be lost but now I'm found fans"... and Eric the owner, came up just by keeping the store open for a few extra hours for shits-&-giggles. Speaking of getting live, let's talk about the Lollapalooza contest! After our photo shoot at Una Mae's Freak Boutique we really felt like we were onto something big. The next day we were all like, "so what now?" then we thought,"Damn if two million people are gonna be reading about Kinky Notti this July, we better get our asses up and finish this album we've been working on all year!!"

Originally we had planned on dropping a full-length album. That was before we got six-songs deep into the project and found our chips going down fast... so we decided to go with an EP release instead. Sounded great in theory, but we also knew that without a decent way to promote our new project, we would need something to help swing a bit of synergy our way.

That's when the Lollapalooza "Last Band Standing" contest appeared before our eyes in the form of an email from Sonicbids. We jumped right on the opportunity with an inkling that if we could just make it to the final round and perform at Double Door, the contest would be had.

Round one was a madhouse with thousands of bands all scrambling to collect email votes all at once like some sort of digital egg hunt. We chilled and remained confident in our strategy to calmly qualify for round two... We had read that the winners of round one would be selected by celebrity judges, who would have to funnel 100 qualifying bands down to just 20. Simple math showed that if we just depended on family members and friends from our personal email accounts, we would rank in the top 100. We figured all we'd need after that was for the celebrity judges to hear our music, because once they did we'd be chosen for round two without a doubt. It's not like we're really that arrogant, but we just stand behind our work like a muffoccur.

Even though we felt pretty confident at the time, we almost wet our pants when we found out we were on of the top 20 chosen bands for the next round–– we're talking about thousands of bands worldwide who participated in this contest and here we were, standing that much closer to the Lolla stage! Soon all that excitement turned serious... right away round three proved to be more beastly than the other two. We needed to collect votes again, but this time only five bands with the top votes could move on to the next round. ((That's when shit started getting crazy wild!))

Can you believe someone had the f*cking balls to send us this email?

First of all, that's the oldest trick in the book: trying to psych out the offenders...so obviously this email came from another band in the Lolla competition. But didn't they know that Kinky Notti has deep connects? Contrary to popular belief, Chicago actually does support its artists. All we had to do at that point was let the dogs out... our special promoter friends that is. A total of 75,000 emails went out all over the city in three days! Quickly we saw our votes push us from 14th place up to 9th place. The rest is history, or shall we say present time?

All we wanna do is express musically and do shows–– that's it! That's what we love to do, but even more than that we love the people who help create a music scene that's open to bands like us & who want us to bring fresh & memorable experiences to people all over the world. It's a damn shame that some people have a hate for our mission and don't support it. But contest or no contest, please believe we already won... BUT OF COURSE WE WANNA WIN THIS LOLLAPALOOZA CONTEST LIKE A MUFF-OCCUR!! Somehow this very situation feels like one of those R.L. Stine books from back in the day that allowed the reader to decide the fate of the characters ((for Kinky Notti to win & give their all at Lollapalooza, turn to page 128, lol))

Una Mae's Photoshoot

This time we had a "for real, for real" photo shoot with muff-occurs flying all the way in from NY to take pictures of us! Sometimes opportunities knock & remind us that we're kind of a big deal. We felt honored that the out-of-town-crew wanted to create a direct mail piece and send it out to a list of millions, featuring Kinky Notti & the legendary Big Daddy Kane ((Common's favorite emcee))!!

We literally shut down Una Mae's Freak Boutique ((Kink Not's fav vintage & rare-find-boutique in Chicago)). Usually they close at 8pm everyday, but they agreed to accommodate our photo shoot schedule from six pm til one am one Friday night. The owner Nancy, & Nick are the shit for their support! xoxox

First we met up with Agga B. the stylist ((architect in fashion...the girl's truly on the come up)). She took us shopping and helped us piece together our fits as a group. The crazy thing is that we were originally assigned to another stylist but she came down with strep at the last minute before the shoot. So when Agga became our stylist it felt like a ten-minute shopping spree trying to find our entire wardrobe with only one day to shop.

We had to work our regular jobs on photo shoot day...so when we left work, we felt like Superman (& woman) changing out of our gig-wear into Kinky Notti wardrobe. HaveMax's hair had been double-strand twisted prior to the shoot, so it needed to be separated on set...a task that was misguestimated by hours. The crew had to rush our hair & makeup session in order to stay on schedule. Luckily we had the talented Alfred Lester ((makeup artist for Alicia Keys, Heidi Klum & Fergie just to name a few)) to quickly whip us up into shape!

So once we were all dazzled and frazzled... we took our first shots on the green couch. We worked with Matt Salacuse ((this photographer does it all...rock, rap, celebs, mag covers, ads, documentaries, you name it!))...he was loads of fun & beyond awesome. Every once in a while, he gave us wild suggestions like "Hey HaveMax- you should act like you're grabbing Chivas' tie" (it was silk-screened onto his shirt)...or "Have- I like that one evil face you made, gimme some more of that"...then he told Chae to sit on the arm of the couch, which was super skinny so it completely cut up her ass...but hey- beauty is pain :D

It was dope checking out all the shots right away on the computer screen. Between shots, Agga and Alfred would jump in to tighten up shirts, fix stray hairs & touch-up makeup...their grooming went a long way to help us get those hot shots for the piece.

Una Mae's is such an amazing place. Since we already shop there on the regular, it felt like we were playing dress up, pulling clothes right off the rack for most of the shots. We'd be like "ooh lemme see that belt buckle... or "yep, these pants are gonna bang with this fit!" We even got to keep all the gear from the shoot in the end :D

Street traffic kept stopping & staring inside at the spectacle. We spent part of the photo shoot taping the video-interview portion of the piece. In all actuality, we don't know whether the piece will be used for the web, or as an included DVD with the direct-mail piece, or both...but we'll keep you posted on where you can find it. Anyway, the video-interviews were tight...we took turns spitting our piece about music, life, & random shit we give a fuck about.

During the final shot, things got a little more Kinky & Notti...the Tellian had us warmed us up by then! We asked Nick & Nancy to blast some of our music through the store speakers as Matt clicked away from the floor. We started getting wilder with our poses, sprawling ourselves across the display table & lip sinking "Beneath the Deck" for the camera. By the end, we were totally performing for the entire crew!

So, long story short (too late) in July-O-eight you might just open your mailbox and find us inside...Kink Not?

HaveMax B-Day Special

As of late, we've been kinda floating around, falling into different spots- just drawing inspiration from every corner and crevice we can find. We spotted the Velvet Lounge one nite and decided to stop in for a drink. It was such a dope & unexpected treat to find live jazz in the hood!! We chilled at the bar for a min to feel the vibe.

First Part- HaveMax's b-day weekend. Saturday nite, she wanted to go somewhere off-beat & not really deal with the obnoxious club scene. Liam of The Life Askew invited us to their exclusive fashion event called "The Focus" which turned out to be just the type of event that HaveMax could adore. It was at 773Event ((dope spot where they basically turned a work space into a raw tri-level house party)). The grungy basement had a bar, then the main level's walls were all covered in graffiti by the hands of Joe Suta ((Choke of the Chicago graffiti movement...might've seen his work at Akira)). We all hung out upstairs in the "impromtu VIP section" which was the perfect spot for smoking out.

All we needed was an airbrushed Mercedes Benz behind us & wed've had the perfect
"oh-so-hood" take-home souvenir-pic, complete with the black, matte take-home frame

Instead of a fashion show, they did an interactive photo shoot, where they projected tons of dope shots right onto the wall. It was cool how the same models blown up on the wall were gallivanting around us in the same outfits as in the shots. It was such a dope concept... plus it took up a lot less space than putting a biggass runway down the middle of the floor.

HaveMax kicked it hardcore with Chiv & her sister Brit that nite which was a nice treat because Brit's got a new baby- so naturally she's working overtime with lil Jabber Jaws. Chae was M.I.A. that nite, which turned out to be hilarious because muff-occurs actually thought that Kinky Notti had replaced its third member...but Brit can't really hold a note, so Chae doesn't have to worry about that one happening!

Part II - Sunday nite... We kicked it at Crimson Lounge ((basically the downstairs lounge of Saks hotel)). We were fashionably late and had to politic our way through the door because it was a marketing event & they had already pulled the list before we arrived. But once we got inside, the party was already juking with tons of muff-occurs on the dance floor. To loosen up a bit we went to go sip the flask in the bathroom.

The bathroom waiting area was kinda dope & somehow inspired us. It was something about the decor with its velvety-blue walls & caramel-colored leather couch across the hallway...either that or the booze was woorrrkiiing. Or maybe after such a fashion-driven experience the nite before, we just felt like striking a few drunken poses ((this has now become one of our favorite hobbies)). So the next thing we knew we were all into our "mini shoot"- not even caring about the people entering & leaving the bathrooms around us. We'd just wait until they got out of our shots and then *click click*

Trialz & Tribulationz

So we're in the lab right now. We've been working on this one track off and on for months now and we're finally starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel with it's level of completion. We all got real gigs ((Tshurhad= marketing/events dude * HaveMax= graphic designer * Chae= hair stylist)) so time spent on songs feel like dog years for us...it's a wild beast trying to sneak in weekend & after-work hours with families, financial needs & other grown-folk ish to worry about.

That Hot Kink Not Laboratory

That's why each song birthed from us feel like our babies. Each project pushes us further to create a better work of art- more concise and more polished. Our focus is to create a collection of pieces that somehow fit together- even tell a story, if you can make sense of the whole hodgepodge.

Being in a group like Kinky Notti ain't no punk. Art of course is highly preferential by nature. One has a way of guarding and offending one's personal tastes as sacred and highly valid. Therefore, the subtlest differences in flavors can send a group's project back to the drawing board in a moment's time.

Just last weekend, Chae & HaveMax got into it real ugly...to the point of Have saying "get the fuck out of my house" and Chae saying "and I won't ever come back!" But days after that, everyone was back to chilling again like fam. That's the whole maddening side of being involved with such a dynamic trio. We're all extremely opinionated artists (not to mention the drama that comes when you add together two women with diva mentalities and random PMS-induced mood swings)...it's no wonder that trios rarely exist in the music biz with two chicks and one dude. Poor Tshurhad is always in the middle of the cat fights thinking "these bitches are crazy as hell!!"

We're all extremely passionate about the ideas, influences & talent we each bring to the table. When we disagree, one often feels obligated to bring one's case before the jury, thus testifying one's right for their idea to live on a track. As follows, the defense presents its argument until a final verdict is reached between all, otherwise all die of exhaustion during the process. It's like a war zone...we have to fight to the finish.

A trio equals instant democracy for any given situation, along with instinctual feelings of "this time it's me against the double-crossers". All experience being "the rejectee" where one either mediates a situation or is forced to reconcile ones differences with the others. However, the magic lives inside those auspicious moments when a concept can be shared equally amongst all. The result is nothing short of collaborative genius at its finest- a triumph over the human ego. The product is music. (( I, You, She, We = the next completed Kinky Notti single!!!))

So lets see...we got Nasty Nasty, Beneath the Deck, Respirator Thump, and Caught Up so far...with this new banger, that makes us one step closer to a complete Kinky Notti collection. WORD!

So there's this one celebrity fashion designer you may have heard of... She goes by the name of Kesh. One day we checked out her blog ((therealkesh.blogspot.com)) and read "CHICAGO 2NIGHT!!!! I CAN'T WAIT TO COME AND SEE YOU CHICAGO :D"...but at the time she didn't say the exact location and the time, so we were like "where the fuck...when the fuck?!"

Later that day we stopped at a rack sale and ran into our girl Colleen from Heroine Chic ((her belt buckles R.O.C.K...go grab yours now at the Macy's on State St. Chi-IL)). So anyway, Colleen was at the rack sale showcasing her merch when cosmically a deck of flyers appeared to us on her table that read "THE HOLLYWOOD EXPERIENCE...SOUNDTRACK BY DJ JOURNEY (LA) AND KESH (LONDON) @ TABU ULTRALOUNGE"... We were like "wow that's crazy...now we know where the fuck and when the fuck!"

So after some small talk we discovered that Colleen was actually a part of the whole "Hollywood Experience" event, along with her girl Dana of Concrete Runway ((stylist/TV show producer...the girl does her thing)) Of course when we found that out, we had a suggestion for "a really hot group from Chicago who could rock the runway"... Kink Not? :D

The H.N.I.C.

Without a question we were on ten after being added to the bill! But because this was a last-minute decision, we ended up having to lug our own sound equipment to the spot. Good thing we got there extra early that nite because we had to jimmy-rig our whole sound system just so muff-occurs could hear us. But once all the fuckry was over of having to run all over downtown looking for extension cords and adapter plugs, the crowd started trickling in.

Dana introduced us to DJ Journey ((Chitown native gone La La)) and we soon found that it was actually a re-introduction. He remembered us from a previous band project...but so much time had passed since then, he was sleep on "Kinky Notti". But as soon as we described our new sound to him, he was totally down for the mission.

Kesh was first on the wons-&-toos while we pulled together a game plan with Journey and Dana. Then somebody said that we should put Kinky Notti on first to kick off DJ Journey's set,right before the fashion show...the rest is history. Mission complete!

The "live mannequins" were amazing! Tres Belle Vintage put their foot in it...((super-hip stylists/designers with a vintage line)). The Life Askew added their touches with a tight, ready-to-wear clothing line ((totally loving the new line, btw!))

So this was the real kicker-- just as things were warming up, Dana had to shut the music off and make an announcement. Turns out the police ordered the venue to shut down the party due to a suspension or some shit. The whole party was at a complete standstill. We were all standing around, mouths hanging open like "get the fuck outa here!" Luckily it all turned out to be a misunderstanding. So you know after that, muff-occurs were really ready to celebrate...Tshurhad Chivas grabbed the mic and yelled out "All ya'll who thought yall wasn't tryna dance before got a second chance now to get get yo ass out here on this dancefloor!" Somehow that whole situation made the party more on bone!

We only performed one song (Nasty Nasty) just as planned and plotted...just enough to hype the crowd before the crazy-80's fashion show began. The dance floor thickened up as we were taken to Hollywood...DJ Journey-style. KINK NOT?

Part II...Kesh's last nite in Chitown ended up at the "I Love Haters show" at Sub-T. This shoulda been a whole 'nother posting, but we don't really feel like creating a new one ((shit takes 4ever!!)) But anyway, this was a great nite becuase we got out to see some of our peeps rock the mic for a change. ((Crazy Hotness!!))

There were a ton of peeps on this bill, but we only saw Mic Terror,

Bar Louie Blizzard

So this one time we all headed to the Bar Louie in Hyde Park for a lil group "pow wow" over veggie burgers. It was freezing cold and we couldn't find parking anywhere around the spot, so HaveMax & Chae went inside while "Chivalrious Chivas" proceeded to park the car another two or three blocks away from the bar.

It went for bad all of a sudden and that's when we witnessed what we swear was the most insane snowstorm in Chicago weather history! No, but really- how can it start off at 40-degrees and then drop to 20-below zero (w/windchill factor) all in one day? The storm was at full throttle by the time we finished dinner, but all our dumasses decided to still ruff it and run to go get the car through the snowstorm...

Now don't forget that Kinky Notti is from the Chi, so please believe we've all seen our share of blizzards, but this storm was a fucking beast...The wind blew so strong, the snowflakes damn near flew horizontally! Anyway, as we were running to the car, we whipped the camera out for some blizzard shots just for shits-n-giggles.

For a sec the storm got too wild to even play around in. Have Max and Chae had to run and seek shelter in a condo lobby while Chiv ran the rest of the way to the car. The doorman didn't even care that we didn't live in the building... he ruled! He actually helped us crack jokes on a lady and her dog who got blown all the way up the street!

Kinky Carnivale

One of our fave DJ's from Chicago is DJ World. Not only does he grind hardcore with The Soul Selectors ((sick army of DJ's)) but he's been down with the Kink Not mission since day one. When he and DJ Leon Q spun at Carnivale last week they asked Kinky Notti be their special guest hosts...you know Kink Not aint neva scared!

As The World Turns...

Speakers blasted out hot salsa rhythms as we stepped through the door. We watched at first trying to take notes on all the steps (we still need to learn how to salsa!) but then DJ World turned on some steppa's joints and Chiv and Chae LaFunk had to get loose real quick.

Chae is instant comedy always acting so far beyond her years! Did you peep that "TT Hat-N-Shawl" combo she was rocking?! She got rode all nite for that. The killer was when TT Chae got to stepping and caught a charlie horse in her left leg!!

When World threw on our first joint, "Beneath the Deck" we did a half-performance on the dance floor since we didn't have any mics (we were only supposed to host that nite!)...The crowd was really feelin it though. Chitown Record Bangers

Chiv & Have bounced to another impromptu artsy affair. We had heard about this crew called the Chitown Record Bangers ((online radio station doing big thangs)). Anyway, we got word that they were inviting some local music artists over for a live set in their studio loft, so you know we had to invade the scene. We were hella surprised when we got there to find that a ton of muff-occurs who already knew and loved Kniny Notti.

A digital cam & huge vanity flash-gadget were already set up with Joe the photographer posted up on the other side. DJ Rebel 1 and DJ OuTaStyLe kept the "online party" head-bangin' all nite. We were just in time as peeps started literally jumping to have their pics taken....

Kinky Notti was hangin' out with some of our "artsy friends" (oohwee oohwee ooo). The invite to Guns and Brushes came in the form of one the most poetic emails we've ever received. The subject read "SAVING CHICAGO FROM ARTISTIC GENTRIFICATION..." Guns and Brushes turned out to be a gallery showcase, aimed to focus on the artists who chose to pursue work and talents over social status and formal education.

They called this month's exhibit "Live Jive", conceived by the hands of poet/ healer/ painter Smokie; Chicago’s own fresh engineer artist Casmir Mercedes; and event producer, Dustin. It was tight...We got to see some people we hadn't seen in a minute and we got a lil taste of what's good in the hood. We could see the artists' heavy nfluence by Basquiat... it was sort of like looking at a cave man's work on some Back-to-the-Future-Graffiti-type-shit. We could dig it.

We were bobbing our headz and vibing all nite. We didn't even peep our guy, Sonny Daze hiding up in an elevated loft til the end when we were bouncing out. DrUNkeN MoNkeeE hosted and kept disappearing and reappearing all nite in masks and shit, on some real ninja shit. We missed his performance, but we still walked away with a small consolation prize.

Note: art shows in sub-zero temps with busted heaters suckass! When was the last time you saw a bunch of free wine sitting out not being consumed? It was too cold to even get drunk! Some Maker's shots probably woulda done the trick. But overall, the event felt like exactly what we are looking for in our quest to begin a wild revolution within the Chicago artist community. A new "artist playground" is developing...POP Life is emerging, Kink Not??

C4 @ Urban Outfitters

One Friday, Kink Not gets a sporadic text message inviting us to C4's show at the Urban Outfitters on the Mag Mile, featuring Peanut Butter Wolf. Floyd the Fourth and DJ C.Y.Not are the dynamic Super Duo that makes C4, a choice hip hop group in Chicago. And Peanut Butter Wolf is Stone's Throw Peanut Butter Wolf. You know we had to catch the vibe...

When's the last time you got to shop for gear and hear classic, live, underground hip hop?! Did I mention that Floyd the Fourth's job title is "store display artist" at Urban? So of course we gotta give him his P's for also constructing the dopest in-store stage, with his bare hands.

We anticipated seeing Peanut Butter Wolf for the first time, but we found out that they were held up at LAX and wouldn't be making the show. It looked like the event was a wrap, but c4 still decided to rock the mic regardless. The show was super dope! Floyd the Fourth was on some crazy shit, jumpin on display tables...but that's the brilliance of retail shows.
